What is life insurance?

Life insurance pays out a sum of money if, during the term of the policy, you die or you're diagnosed with a terminal illness that meets our policy definition and aren't expected to live longer than a year. Once we pay out, the cover ends. It could give your family some financial security and your loved ones could use the money to help pay bills or maintain their living standards when you're no longer here.

Be aware that this isn't a savings or investment plan and it only pays out on a successful claim. If premiums aren't paid the cover will end and you'll get nothing back.

It's easy to apply online and you can get a quote in just a few minutes. You must be in the UK with a legal right to live there. You must consider your main home to be in the UK (which doesn't include the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar) and have no current intention of permanently moving elsewhere. You must be aged between 18 and 77 at the time of applying.

Mortgage protection - decreasing cover

You may want to choose this type of cover to help your loved ones pay off a repayment mortgage or long-term loan if you die during the policy term. The amount you have left to pay on your mortgage usually decreases over time, so our mortgage protection cover also goes down. It usually costs less than level cover and your monthly premiums will stay the same throughout the policy term, but your cover amount will gradually reduce throughout the policy term.

Family protection - level cover

With this type of cover, your cover amount and premium stay the same throughout the policy term. If you die during this time, your loved ones could use the lump sum to help them pay off debts or put it towards living costs and monthly outgoings, such as rent.

If you choose level cover, over time that could be worth less due to inflation. You can help protect that by choosing increasing cover, so your payout increases over time.

Some important things to think about

When thinking about life insurance, there are some important things to bear in mind before you go ahead:

    Lump sum payment

  • Choose up to £5 million worth of cover.

  • Premiums from £5 a month

  • A range of options to suit your needs and how much you can afford.

  • Flexible cover term to suit your needs

  • Choose the length of cover you need. From 5 to 50 years, or until you're 90 years old. Once its finished , your cover will stop and you won't be able to make a claim. The price you will pay will depend on the level of cover selected and your personal circumstances.

  • Single or joint policies

  • You can take out a single policy to cover one person, or you and your partner can take out a joint policy to cover both of you. If you take out a joint policy, it will end when the first person makes a successful claim. Both types of policy finish when the policy term ends.

  • Terminal illness automatically included

  • This means you'll get a lump sum payment early if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness that meets our definition and you're not expected to live more than a year.

  • Optional critical illness cover

  • A separate policy which gives you a lump sum pay-out if you’re diagnosed with or undergo surgery for one of the 52 critical illnesses covered by the policy, so you can worry less about your finances and focus on your health.
Dependent on the definition of the critical illness, we may pay on diagnosis only, when the condition has progressed to a specified severity or when named treatments or surgeries are performed. To claim, you must meet our definition and survive for 10 days.
Full details of what each definition covers can be found in the policy conditions.
On a Critical Illness Plan there's no death benefit. Be aware that this isn’t a savings or investment plan. It only pays out on a successful claim. If premiums aren't paid or you cancel your policy, the cover will end and you’ll get nothing back.

  • Flexibility to cancel at any time

  • Don't worry, you're not locked into your policy and you can cancel free of charge at any time.
